BASSETT FAMILY REUNION

Letter From

Simone Bassett Robbins

You are invited to attend the Bassett Family Reunion on May 27, 2000 in Fort Valley, Georgia. We hope to be able to send you details on possible accommodations, travel information, etc. but meanwhile we especially wanted you to know about the reunion in time to plan accordingly.

To the best of our knowledge, our branch of the family has never had a general family reunion. When Paul and Delise Knight, the present owners of the old homeplace known to us as Pineola Farm, came up with the idea it seemed at first to be an impossible fantasy. However, the more I and my sisters discussed it, the more believable the plan became until by now it has almost assumed a life of its own.

Marguerite, Marise, Patsy, and I feel our ages, and would like very much to have our children and their children get to know each other before such ties become irrevocably lost. Besides, we just think it would be such fun to see everyone, some of whom we haven’t seen in many years and others whom we have never seen.

Paul and Delise have very generously offered Pineola as sort of family headquarters, opening their hearts and home to us. They will be doing the agenda for what we call “the Big Day,” Saturday May 28 when we hope to assemble as many of us as possible. However, we hope you will think of this as more a “Reunion Week” and plan to come early and stay late. Several of us at least will be going down on Wed. May 24 or Thurs. May 25, and staying through Sunday May 28 or Tuesday, May 30. There are quite a few interesting things to do in the area, and we feel sure time will just fly.

Choosing a date has been a real challenge, since there is no perfect time when everyone could be free to go. Also we realize the undersirability of traveling on a holiday weekend, but we hope that because of the holiday some of us who work will still be able to come.

Possible events include having dinner as a group at the New Perry Hotel where we went so often in the past, or a trip to the old family cemetery known as Shiloh located by Paul and Delise after some diligent sleuthing near Centerville just off Highway 41. And for some of us who attended the Presbyterian Church as children going there to church on Sunday will be a nostalgic “Must Do.”

Henriette Bassett used to say she wanted Pineola to be a showplace for the county. She would be very gratified to see what the Knights and some of the other previous owners have done to it. It has become a major attraction in the area, and is indeed a show place of great beauty. With Paul and Delise so magnanimously offering to share it with us in May, we feel attending to Reunion is in many ways a “Once in a Lifetime” Opportunity.

We do sincerely hope you will agree with us and do everything within your power to attend. For those of you for whom it is impossible, we will try to share photos and memories in so far as possible. Keep your invitation as a souvenir of precious things past and future.

We do need a “head-count” so would much appreciate your letting either Paul and Delise or me know your plans.

With Love to you all and hoping to see you in May.

Welcome Home

From Paul & Delise Knight

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Bassett Home Place, our home. We feel so honored to be helping host the Bassett Family Reunion and Saturday will be an unbelievable day for us.

Lunch Saturday at The Bassett House will be a true Southern covered dish meal prepared by friends & family just for you. Saturday after lunch will be an afternoon filled with getting to know each other, a chance to exchange memories and to share old photos with each other.

We will have available for you a color copier, scanner and a CD-Rom for you to take home your new finds.

Take this opportunity to invite any old friends from the area to enjoy lunch or to just stop by and visit with you anytime on Saturday. Relive old memories by walking the grounds of Pineola or visiting the Bassett barn or just sitting on the porch.

Saturday evening we will warm up the leftovers and churn fresh peach ice cream.

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of many of the Bassetts we have collected a lot of history on the Bassett Family including photos, old letters and other documents dating back to the mid 1800’s and this is our opportunity to share all of this with you.

We know a lot of you have never been in the Bassett homeplace but some of your parents, grandparents & great-grand parents grew up here, visited here or just heard about this wonderful place.

We look forward to your visit in May and would love to hear from you.
