Descendants of Francis Bassett

Generation 1

1. Francis Bassett-1 was born about 1735 in England[1]. He died after May 1790 in Barnwell, SC

(likely).

Notes for Francis Bassett:

General Notes:

Our family tradition has long held that Francis Bassett, our original immigrating ancestor, was one of

three brothers, who came to this country from England before the Revolutionary War, the other

brothers going to the north to settle, while Francis went first to Virginia and then on to North Carolina.

No records have been found at this point (2001) to document these facts or establish the possible

year of his arrival in America.

There are Revolutionary War records on Francis Bassett, who served as a sergeant with the South

Carolina State Militia from April 5, 1781 to March 16, 1782, in Capt. Jacob Barnett's company, Col.

Henry Hampton's Regt. of Light Dragoons, commanded by Brig. Gen. Sumter. (1) During his period of

service, this unit fought in the Battle of Thompson's Fort on the Congaree (Calhoun Co.), the Battle of

Orangeburgh on May 11, 1781, and the battle of Eutaw Springs in Nov. 1781.(2) Francis is listed in

"Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution" by Bobby Gilmer Moss.

The age span for those serving in the state militia at that time was 18-45, so it is entirely plausible that

this is our original Francis Bassett (assuming born circa 1740, immigrated circa 1760, served in

militia while in his early 40's). As South Carolina was being overrun by the British in 1781-2, it is likely

that the age limit would have been ignored and he could even have been older. This could, however,

be a son of our original Francis, and therefore a brother of William, Eli, John and Thomas Bassett

whose stories follow.

For the sake of clarity, it should be mentioned, that the area of South Carolina where the Bassetts

settled was first called the Orangeburgh District (until the late 1780's), then Winton County (until

1798), then Barnwell County and in modern times, Allendale County. The lands owned by the Bassett

family are today within the confines of the Savannah River Project, known locally as "The Bomb

Plant".

Francis Bassett RS (Revolutionary War Soldier), was a property owner and a tax payer in the

Orangeburgh District, S.C. in 1786, where he purchased 378 acres.(3)

He is listed 14 times in Brent Holcomb's book "Winton County, Minutes of County Court & Will Book 1,

1785-1791", as Deputy Clerk of Court, witness, and as a grand juror, obviously, an active and

respected citizen of his community. The last court record of Francis Bassett is in May, 1790, when he

served as a juror. The proven four Bassett brothers, William, Eli, John and Thomas, are documented

there for another 20 years or more, lending credence to the thought that they were the sons.

Descendants of Francis Bassett

Generation 1 (con't)

Francis Bassett and unknown spouse married. They had the following children:

2. i. John Bassett was born about 1760.

3. ii. Thomas Bassett was born about 1762. He died after 1820 in McIntosh Co. GA[2]. He

married Luranna in Barnwell, South Carolina, USA.

4. iii. William Bassett was born about 1765[3]. He married Mary Phillips about 1786. He died on

14 Mar 1810 in Barnwell, SC[4].

5. iv. Eli Bassett was born about 1765 in Possibly NC[5]. He died after 1837 in Likely Florida[6].

Generation 2

2. John Bassett-2 (Francis-1) was born about 1760.

Notes for John Bassett:

General Notes:

Our first sighting of John Bassett in old records is when he signed as a witness to the will of Catherine

Gregory in Cumberland Co. NC in 1786. Catherine was an aunt of Mary Phillips Bassett (wife of

brother, William Bassett). Mary and her siblings were legatees. This may or may not indicate that

John, as well as his brother William, had a Cumberland Co. NC connection.

Interestingly, John Bassett is the only one of our Bassetts appearing in the first Federal Census in

1790., even though we know the others were very much around. He is listed in the Orangeburgh

district of South Carolina (South part) pg. 101, with 2 males and 1 female. (Indicating a wife and 1

son)

In the 1800 census, John is married with one son and two daughters and still living in Barnwell Co.

SC (formerly the Orangeburgh Dist.)

John's relationship to his brother, William, is mentioned in a letter written by William Bassett from

Sapelo, Ga (McIntosh Co.) to Lewis Malone Ayer in Barnwell, SC in 1803 (Ayer Collection,

Caroliniana Library, USC) promising "return of your horse to you by my brother John".

In 1807, a John Bassett of McIntosh County had a successful draw in the Georgia Land Lottery for Lot

197 of District 24, Pulaski County. It is uncertain which generation of John Bassett this may be and I

do not know if he ever claimed the land.

It could be John Bassett, brother of William, Thomas and Eli. Eli had a son John, but he would have

been a child in 1807 and is believed to have settled in Florida ultimately.

We do know that a large John Bassett family was in Houston County in the mid-1800's, believed to be

cousins of our Stephen.

A John Bassett is listed buying and selling property in Barnwell Co. through 1816.

Mary.

John Bassett and Mary married. They had the following children:

6. i. John Bassett Jr. was born about 1785 in Barnwell, Soth Carolina. He died after 1850 in

Houston Co. GA.

Generation 2 (con't)

ii. Daughter 1 Bassett was born after 1790.

iii. Daughter 2 Bassett was born after 1790.

3. Thomas Bassett-2 (Francis-1) was born about 1762. He died after 1820 in McIntosh Co. GA[2].

Notes for Thomas Bassett:

General Notes:

Thomas Bassett appears in land records of the Orangeburgh district of SC in 1787.

He, along with his brothers, was buying and selling land and is a documented resident of Barnwell

County between 1787-1809.

The following is from a 1789 medical log of Dr. Moses Newton (1765-1824) He covered the large

area of the Savannah River on both sides and he refers to "the Saltcatcher" and other names

associated with Barnwell County. I have not seen the log, only the reference to it, which coincidentally

gives this excerpt as an example of things included in the log. (spelling and punctuation irregularities

are his)

"William Bassett November 3 day he lives 2 1/2 miles below the Cyprus Williams. (Land owned by

William Bassett was adjacent to land belonging to John Williams <died 1802> and is refered to in

deeds as near the "Cypress". The "Big Cypress is also mentioned in the will of John Williams)

His brother Thomas has undertaken to take medicine for the rumatic pains the price for cure not to

exceed 4 cows and calves, he don't prosper."

(The above mentioned Moses Newton is found on the 1799 Jefferson Co. GA tax index, page 24)

In the 1800 Census, his wife Luranna is listed as head of the household, (Where was Thomas? ) and

there were 3 children living at home.

Property owned jointly by Eli, John, Thomas and William was sold in Barnwell in 1800.

(Deed Book W. pg. 94, Barnwell Courthouse)

Thomas and Eli jointly sold property together in 1804 and Thomas was brought into court twice in

1805 for owing money.

In the 1820 census fo McIntosh County, GA, we find Thomas Bassett (over 45, I feel it is our Thomas,

due the connection of the family with Sapelo Island, which is in McIntosh Co.) with a much younger

wife (under 26) and 4 daughters, 3 of them under 10 and 1 in her 20's. I believe that Mary Ann, Sarah

and Eveland Bassett of McIntosh Co., by then listed as "orphans", who won land in the 1827 Land

Lottery in Lee Co., are the 3 young daughters of Thomas listed in the 1820 census.

Luranna.

Thomas Bassett and Luranna were married in Barnwell, South Carolina, USA. They had the following

children:

i. Unknown Bassett.

ii. Unknown Bassett.

iii. Unknown Bassett.

Unknown was born after 1794[7].

Thomas Bassett and Unknown married. They had the following children:

i. Mary Ann Bassett[2] was born after 1810[2].

7. ii. Sarah Ann Bassett was born on 06 Jun 1815 in McIntosh Co. GA[2]. She died on 24 Sep

1867 in Ware Co. GA.

iii. Eveland Bassett was born after 1810[2].

4. William Bassett-2 (Francis-1) was born about 1765[3]. He died on 14 Mar 1810 in Barnwell, SC[4].

Notes for William Bassett:

General Notes:

William Bassett's birthplace is not known. He was one of 4 brothers, by tradition, sons of our original

Francis.

William Bassett is listed as a Volunteer in the Revolutionary War from NC, where he served as a

Private in 4 Company, Nc Regiment.. No date on this NC Archive record.

The first record of William Bassett in SC, of which I am aware, is in Winton (later Barnwell) County,

SC in Jan. 1788, when he appears in court, along with two other men, for "Affray" (fighting). After

acknowledging their error and promising future better behavior, they are fined and discharged. (

"Winton County, Minutes of County Court & Will Book 1, 1785-1791")

William married Mary Phillips of Cumberland Co. NC., with whom he had 3 sons, Stephen, Thomas

and Francis. It is believed that their marriage lasted for about 10 years. (1787-97)

Mary was the daughter of Stephen Phillips, a lawyer in the Cumberland Co. area, and his wife,

Flora McAlester. (1) Mary was also the grand-daughter of John and Ann McAlester (2), who

immigrated to the Cape Fear River area of North Carolina from the Scottish Highlands in 1739. This

group of 350 settlers established what became known as the Argyll Colony, settling along the river

near near Cross Creek in the region of present day Fayetteville, NC., about 90 miles upriver from

where they had landed at Wilmington. (3)

(Of special interest; Stephen Phillips, Mary's father, appears to be the origin of the name Stephen in

the Bassett family.)

Family oral tradition says that Mary left William in SC following the breakup of their marriage(4),

and went back to Cumberland County, NC to be near her family, taking the boys with her. We know

that she appears in the 1800 census in Cumberland Co. NC, as head of her own household with 3

young boys.(5) No record of a divorce has been found in NC, nor was it possible in SC at that time.

According to an entry in the Pineola Bible, Mary died in 1809. (6)

Great effort was put into trying to acquire land by all of the Bassett brothers. William and John

were active in at least 3 states, that we know of (NC, SC, and GA.). William and Eli tried

unsuccessfully for the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery.

In letters found recently (1999) we learned that William had married again, to a woman named

Elizabeth, and by 1803, was living on Sapelo Island, GA (McIntosh Co.), where he was a cotton

planter. (7) The mainland of the state of Georgia is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a chain of

barrier islands scattered along her coast. Sapelo is one of these, a low-lying island, consisting of

Page 4 of 94 Saturday, June 04, 2011 1:09:22 PM

approximately 23 square miles and lying about 40 miles south of Savannah, GA. While living on

Sapelo Island, William was also serving as a Captain in the Georgia State Militia. (8) His marriage to

Elizabeth would seem to have been of fairly short duration with no known children. (When he tried for

the Georgia Land Lottery in 1805, he was entitled to only one draw, indicating that he had neither wife

or children living with him at that time.)

The southern coast of the United States experienced a powerful hurricane on Sept. 8, 1804, that

caused great damage (9) and might have been a catalyst for William and his brothers Eli, and John to

temporarily leave Sapelo Island. The barrier islands suffered great damage and loss of life in the

storm. One could even wonder if Elizabeth survived the storm, as she apparently met her demise

somewhere between 1803 and 1805.

There is an interesting entry in the Barnwell Common Pleas Journal 1800-18, pg. 85.

It reads; Nancy Johnson vs. William Bassett decree for plaintiff for $64+costs.

This was for child care.....a child or children that she'd cared for and not been paid!

(what child or children, one has to wonder! Did William and Elizabeth have a child?)

This was in 1804.

Again, in 1804, William, then a resident of McIntosh Co. Georgia, purchased 150 acres in Barnwell

Co. SC and it would seem, moved back to Barnwell permanently.

To give an idea of life in this era, the following is included;

WILLIAM BASSETT vs THOMAS RILEY

Declaration on note filed 11 February 1805. (Barnwell Court of Common Pleas)

Rule to plead posted the same date. Thomas Riley was attached to answer to William Bassett in a

plea----wherefore the said Thomas Riley at Barnwell in the district & State of SC, with force and arms

and, to wit, with sticks and swords, made an assault on the said William and him did beat, wound and

ill treat, whereby the said William was in great danger of losing his life. Whereupon, the said William

by Richard Gannt, his attorney, complains that said Thomas on (date not legible) with force and arms,

to wit, with sword, staves, and knives on the said William, did then and there beat, wound and ill treat,

and other outrages there did to the great damage of Said William and against the peace and dignity of

the State of South Carolina. whereby he says that he is prejudiced and has damage to the value of

$2000, and therefore, he brings suit and so forth. Order for judgement 11 March 1806. This case is

settled by the parties, the costs are not paid. 28 Sept. 1806

April 1805-Owen Riley vs William Bassett decree for plaintiff $155 (Barnwell Common Pleas Journal

1800-11, pg. 99)

(Not everyone liked our William!)

At the time of his death in 1810, William was a resident of Barnwell, SC and his widow was Michal

Moye Bassett.(10) William would not have been elderly, probably about 45. His widow, who died two

years later, in 1812, was no more than 28 at the time of her death. (11) Her estate probate mentions

a child, "Gilford Bassett" (12) and she provides quite generously for his future education and care with

her sister, Martha (approximately $25,000 in today's money). Her only two heirs are her brother

Matthew Moye and John Brabham, in right of his wife, Martha Moye Brabham. The probate records

for her estate show that funds for his education were still being withdrawn as late as 1825 by the

Moye family. This leaves vague whether Gilford was a child of William Bassett, perhaps born after his

death, or an earlier, or later, child of Michal's. He is not mentioned in William's 1810 will. To Stephen,

Thomas and Francis Bassett, his sons by Mary, he left 2 slaves each. His home and 150 acres were

left to his widow with instructions for the sale of most else to satisfy his debts. His will would indicate

that he was fairly well off for his day, owning land, livestock, books and household items indicating

comfortable means. The slaves left to his sons, however, would have been his single most valuable

asset.

Mary Phillips daughter of Stephen Phillips and Flora McAlester was born about 1768 in Cumberland

Co. NC. She died on 17 Nov 1809 in Cumberland Co. NC[8].

William Bassett and Mary Phillips were married about 1786. They had the following children:

8. i. Stephen Bassett was born on 27 Nov 1788 in North Carolina[9]. He married Jane Morris

on 12 Feb 1815 in Barnwell District of SC[10]. He died in Aug 1867 in Byron, Ga (Houston

County)[11].

9. ii. Francis Bassett was born about 1790 in South Carolina[12]. He died after 1860 in Barbour

Co. AL[13].

10. iii. Thomas Bassett Jr. was born in 1792 in South Carolina. He died in 1840. He married

Mahala Jackson in Barnwell Co, SC[14].

Elizabeth Erwin daughter of James Erwin and Sarah Daniel. She died before 1805[15].

Notes for Elizabeth Erwin:

General Notes:

Elizabeth is presumed to be Elizabeth Erwin, sister of Rebecca Erwin Ayer and Jane Erwin Player.

This is based on the Sapelo Island letters.

William Bassett and Elizabeth Erwin were married about 1800. They had no children.

Michal Moye daughter of Richard Moye and Phillany. She died in 1812 in Barnwell SC.

William Bassett and Michal Moye were married about 1805. They had the following children:

i. Gilford Bassett was born about 1809.

5. Eli Bassett-2 (Francis-1) was born about 1765 in Possibly NC[5]. He died after 1837 in Likely

Florida[6].

Notes for Eli Bassett:

General Notes:

Eli Bassett is listed as purchasing 380 acres in the Orangeburgh District in April, 1786. (*)

He was in and out of the area of Barnwell, SC, along with other family members, during the period

from 1786, until after his brother William's death in 1810. One of his children was born in McIntosh

Co. GA. in 1803 during the period when we know that his brother, William, was living there. One

wonders if all of the brothers may have been on Sapelo Island, GA (McIntosh Co.) for awhile and then

returned to Barnwell. Eli and his family are listed as residents of Barnwell Co. again in the 1810

Page 7 of 94 Saturday, June 04, 2011 1:09:23 PM

returned to Barnwell. Eli and his family are listed as residents of Barnwell Co. again in the 1810

Federal Census. He is listed as a tax insolvent in McIntosh Co. in 1813-4, indicating he has left that

county. He is again recorded as a land holder in McIntosh Co. in 1818.(#)

He is listed as receiving a Headright and Bounty Grant in 1818 in McIntosh County for 450 acres,

indicating himself, a wife, and 4 children. They did not stay there for long however. By the 1820

Census, Eli and his family are in Appling Co. GA. There is some indication that Eli eventually went to

Florida (son William went there in 1830) An Eli Bassett is listed as a volunteer veteran in the FL

Indian Wars between 1815-1858; He is listed in 3 engagements; (1) McRae's and Smith's Co. of the

2nd E. FL Mtd Vols in FL, (2) Ross' Co. of Warren's 1st FL Mil. in the FL War of 1837, (3) Law's Co. of

the 13th Regt. in the 1st Brig. of FL Mtd. Mil. He is not listed in the Pension Index for that service.

(This last information is from descendents of Eli's son, William)

In the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery, Eli was a "fortunate drawer of land in Monroe County (Dist. 11, Lot

265), but I do not know if he ever claimed the land.

Land represented wealth, and the search for it, and attempt to acquire it, was a big part of their lives.

It would be another generation, at least, before we would see them actually settling and staying for

long.

Rhoda Kersh.

Notes for Rhoda Kersh:

General Notes:

According to Eli Bassett researchers I have corresponded with, Rhoda is believed to be Eli's second

wife. The older children, at least, are thought to be from his first marriage. She is believed to be the

widow of John Kersh of Barnwell. She appears to have raised Eli's children, and was well loved, as

the name Rhoda was continued on in the family.

Rhoda Kersh is listed in the 1800 Census in Barnwell Co. SC as head of household;

1 male under 10

1 female under 10

1 femal 16-26

1 female 26-45 (herself)

Eli Bassett and Rhoda Kersh married. They had the following children:

i. Three other females.

ii. One other male.

11. iii. John Bassett was born in 1801 in NC[16]. He married Frances Jane Baisden about 1834 in

Hamilton Co. FL[17].

12. iv. William Bassett was born in 1800 in Barnwell, South Carolina. He died in Aug 1886 in

Marion Co. Fla..

13. v. Nancy B Bassett was born about 1803 in McIntosh Co. GA. She married James Robert

Daugharty about Nov 1825 in Appling Co. GA[16]. She died in 1845 in Clinch Co. GA.

Generation 3

6. John Bassett Jr.-3 (John-2, Francis-1) was born about 1785 in Barnwell, Soth Carolina. He died

after 1850 in Houston Co. GA.

Notes for John Bassett Jr.:

General Notes:

I believe it highly likely that the John Bassett of McIntosh Co. GA that was a "lucky drawer" in Pulaski

Co. in the 1805 Land Lottery was this John, son of John Bassett of the Barnwell 4 brothers. I also

think it possible that the "other Bassetts" in the Houston Co. area in the mid-1800's are his

descendents. This would mean that he settled in the area, followed in the 1820's by his cousin

Stephen, each of them being sons of the Barnwell 4 brothers.

Mary.

John Bassett Jr. and Mary married. They had the following children:

i. Richard W. Bassett M 1810.

7. Sarah Ann Bassett-3 (Thomas-2, Francis-1) was born on 06 Jun 1815 in McIntosh Co. GA[2]. She

died on 24 Sep 1867 in Ware Co. GA.

Notes for Sarah Ann Bassett:

General Notes:

In 1835, John O'Berry sold 1/3 share of Lot 161, Dist. 14 of Lee County, GA, adding credance to

Sarah Ann and her sisters being the "orphans" who won in the 1827 Land Lottery while living in

McIntosh Co. GA. It is important to know that Thomas Bassett and a much younger wife and 3 small

daughters are listed in the 1820 census.

i. Henry O'Berry was born in 1836.

ii. James R. O'Berry was born in 1839.

iii. Reubin B. O'Berry was born in 1841. He died in 1859.

Stephen Bassett was born in NC, the eldest of the 3 sons of William and Mary Bassett. It is believed

that the family lived for a number of years in SC, however, as later census records indicate the

younger 2 sons, Thomas and Francis, were born there. Sometime prior to 1800, his parents

separated and Mary and her sons returned to NC., where the boys grew up.

Stephen was a resident of Cumberland Co. NC in 1810, as shown in the Federal Census. At age 22,

he is listed as head of the household with his younger brothers, Thomas and Francis, their mother,

Mary Phillips Bassett, having died in 1809. (2)

When his father, William Bassett, died in Barnwell, South Carolina in 1810, Stephen and his uncle, Eli

Bassett, were named as executors of the estate, requiring his attendance in Barnwell Co. It would

seem that Stephen was back and forth between Cumberland Co. and Barnwell Co. for a few years.

He would have had many relatives in both places. In 1814, he purchased 740 acres in Barnwell,

which would seem to indicate he planned to stay in South Carolina. He and his wife, Jane Morris,

met there and were married in 1815, when she was 16. Their first child, Mary, however, was born in

North Carolina in Oct. 1819. Whatever their ties to their home areas, Stephen and Jane relocated to

Georgia soon thereafter.

This was a period of extremely heavy migration into Georgia, especially from the Carolinas, as

settlers tried for the land offered in the Georgia Land Lotteries. Only Georgia residents of three years

or more could participate in the lotteries, although many of the winners sold their winnings to newly

arriving settlers or to land brokers who sold them to the settlers.

Family tradition says that the young family settled first near old Ft. Hawkins, close to Macon, when

that part of the state was still on the frontier and the Cherokee Indians were still inhabiting the area.

By the 1820 Census, they had moved to Jones Co., near Clinton.

In 1828, Stephen purchased 202 1/2 acres from Alexander B. Kennedy for Lot 33, District 5 of

Houston Co. for $250.(1) This was land originally drawn by Mr. Kennedy in the 1821 Georgia Land

Lottery. The property was approximately a mile and a half southeast of Byron, Ga. This is where the

Bassetts settled permanently.

There would be years of hard work ahead, but people who managed to obtain the land that was

offered in the Lotteries, considered themselves fortunate, indeed. The land in Houston County was

Page 10 of 94 Saturday, June 04, 2011 1:09:23 PM

offered in the Lotteries, considered themselves fortunate, indeed. The land in Houston County was

rich. It was also forested and needed to be cleared and fenced in order to plant their crops and

orchards. At this point, roads were few and primitive. Railroads would not arrive in the area until the

1840's.

Their church, assumed to have been the Shiloh Methodist Church, near their farm, was undoubtedly

the mainstay of both their spiritual and social lives. Notations in the Pineola Bible (2) list the dates that

each of the Bassett sons and daughters joined the Church, indicating its great importance to them.

Stephen and Jane farmed, raised their family of 5 children and lived long and productive lives,

accumulating a considerable amount of land in the process.

The Civil War brought great personal tragedy to the family with the loss of 3 grandsons in service,

Stephen and Will Clark (sons of daughter Mary) and Walter Pattishall, (daughter Harriet's son) as

well as the death of a son-in-law, Wiley Clark, (Mary's husband). Two of their young Melvin

grandchildren (children of daughter, Georgia) also died of illness during this time. (1863)

Stephen Bassett died in 1867 (age 78) and Jane in 1870 (age 71). Family tradition says that they are

buried in the Shiloh Methodist Churchyard near Byron, GA. While there are no markers for them in

evidence, there are estimated to be as many as 150 unmarked graves within the cemetery. They

were married for 52 years.

Her Morris family in Barnwell, SC, is a very large group, many of whom remained in the area through

the mid-1900's. There are hundreds of them buried in the Friendship Baptist Churchyard in Olar, SC.

to have lived out their lives there. They are listed living next to two of their daughters, Elizabeth (John

M. Futch) and Catherine (Hezakiah Nash) and their families in Barbour Co., AL. in the 1850 and 1860

census.

More than most, we can look at the old records of Mary's life and marvel at the story they tell and the

history this family lived through. Following the death of her husband of over 25 years during the Civil

War, she homesteaded the Clark farm near Powersville and raised her 3 remaining children there

(Victoria, Sarah and Drew), with 2 of her older boys living nearby. She did not remarry.. She outlived

all but one of her siblings and died in Monroe Co. in 1905 at age 85.

Mary's obituary reads;

"Mrs. Mary A. Clark, daughter of the late Stephen and Jane Bassett was born Oct. 15, 1819 and died

in Monroe Co. Ga. on June 23, 1905. She was buried at Shiloh Methodist Churchyard, Houston Co.

Ga. She married Mr. Wiley Clark. She had 2 sons to die in the War (1). Her husband joined the

State Troups and was taken sick and sent home. When he reached Powersville, Ga. his daughter (2)

had died that day. In a few days, he passed away also. She leaves 2 sons and 1 daughter, Mrs. V.A.

Harriet and her husband Jack, had 13 children, 7 surviving to adulthood.

Below is the text of a letter, written by Harriet to her sister Mary during the Civil War;

At home August 9th, 1863

Mrs. Mary A. A. Clark

My dear sister, I received your kind letter this morning. I was more than glad to hear from you all.

This leaves me with a sick family. Jack and Lish and Eugenia all have the fever and has been down a

week today. Jack has missed his ague five days, but is very weak for he liked to of died. I have been

sick myself. It was caused from fatigue and wanting to sleep. I hope this may reach you all well and

doing well. Dear sister, trouble is common over here, more so among the common people than the

rich. the rich is as high minded as ever and is dodging the war and the troubles of it. dear, it seems

like everything in the way of trouble is come on me at once. it seems insupportable and no friend

near to relate my troubles to nor to sympathize with me it seems like I had rather die than live if it was

not for my helpless little children that would suffer for my attention. I have not heard from my husband

and my son in nearly 3 weeks. I can't tell why they don't write to me I am in a distressed condition

with my sick family and not well myself. this is a very sickly place. I want to get away from here bad.

tell Daniel to get off at buzzard roost station we live two miles from the station. Inquire for the widow

Bryans place or for where we live either. Rebecca Bryans if Jack does not meet him. Jack will meet

him if he knew what day he would come. tell him to come soon. I want you to come with him if you

can. If you cant Mary might the children all want to see Aunt Mary. I dreamed of you last night I must

close so nothing more from your loving and affectionate sister this time.

18. Stephen Elisha Bassett-4 (Stephen-3, William-2, Francis-1) was born on 17 Jun 1833 in Georgia[10].

He died in 1897 in Fort Valley, Georgia[26].

Notes for Stephen Elisha Bassett:

General Notes:

Stephen Elisha was born near Byron, GA. in 1833 and grew up as the second from the youngest child

of Stephen and Jane Bassett. According to the old Pineola Bible pages, he joined the church

(presumed Shiloh Methodist Church) as a young man of 18, and was a practicing Christian for the rest

of his life, devoting much of it to spreading God's word.

He married Frances Hicks (daughter of Elijah H. Hicks and Martha Fudge), on Feb. 18, 1855 in her

father's home in Crawford County. (3) He was 22. She was 20. Early in their marriage, the couple

settled near Fort Valley on the Hardison Place, north of town on Taylor's Mill Road. In 1865, he

purchased the property and built the "Bassett homeplace" (also on Taylor's Mill Road), known later as

Pineola. Here they raised their family and spent many years. The Bassett homeplace remained in

the family for over 100 years, occupied by sons and grandsons and their families.

Stephen Elisha and Frances were married for nearly 35 years and were the parents of 9 children, 7 of

whom lived to adulthood. From an old Diary/Ledger, we know that his pet name for her was "Puss"

(1)

In his early years, the Rev. S. E. Bassett (as Stephen Elisha was listed in later records) was a

Methodist minister and Circuit Rider, traveling and preaching, performing marriages and burying the

departed, around the surrounding counties. These ministers were known as "Saddlebag Saints" for

their efforts at carrying the Word on horseback. (2) Stephen Elisha also farmed and was a highly

successful businessman. He ginned the cotton of his neighbors, sold cotton gins, and acquired

extensive property in both Georgia and Alabama. He was also one of the incorporators of the Dow

Land Bank of Fort Valley as well as one of the founders of the Fort Valley College, the first college for

blacks in the state.

In a disagreement with the Methodist church in 1882, he was granted a letter of removal (a form of

resignation). He thereafter donated the land for and built and established his own church, the

Congregational Methodist Church on Persons Street in Fort Valley. He preached there for 12

years.(2) He also organized the Crawford County Wesleyan Congregational Church. At the time of

his death in 1897, he was superintendent of the Congregational churches of Alabama for the

Congregational Home Missionary Society.

In 1884, the Bassett homeplace was being managed by a Mr. Lonie Taylor (3), which sounds as if

Stephen Elisha and Frances may have moved to town when he built the new church. This is also the

year that Stephen Hicks Bassett purchased the homeplace from his father and his own family moved

there.

For all of the successes and good works during his lifetime, and there were a remarkable number of

them, the Rev. Bassett was also remembered as an excessively harsh father and was greatly

resented for that. We know this from surviving family letters and stories. His will, however, was

based on trust in his family, and no one contested his wishes. He would seem to have been a many

faceted man; a farmer with very large holdings, a successful businessman, and a man dedicated to

Descendants of Francis Bassett

Generation 4 (con't)

faceted man; a farmer with very large holdings, a successful businessman, and a man dedicated to

his religious calling for all of his adult life, paradoxical, but much admired.

Following the death of Frances in 1889, he married "Miss Tommie" Young, who had been the

governess for his daughter Fannie.

When he died, in 1897, his funeral service was preached by the Rev. S.E. McDaniel on the words;

"I have fought a good fight,

I have kept the faith,

I have finished the course.

Servant of God well done,

Rest in thy loved employ." (4)

Stephen Elisha is buried in Oaklawn Cemetery, Ft. Valley, with a wife on either side.

1931 in Ft. Valley, GA.

Notes for Martha Frances Bassett:

General Notes:

Fannie was Stephen Elisha's only daughter and never married. Indeed, family lore has it

that her father and brothers discouraged any romance that might have occurred. She did

go away to prep-school in Alabama, but otherwise, spent her lifetime in Fort Valley.

Stephen Elisha requested in his will that Aunt Fannie was to take care of Miss Tommie, her

step-mother, for as long as Miss Tommie lived, and this Aunt Fannie did. Miss Tommie

died in 1927 and Fannie in 1931. Miss Tommie had been Fannie's governess when she

was a child, and was Stephen Elisha's second wife.

Fannie was an accomplished water colorist and her work is owned today by family

members.

<< Thank you for posting your Bassett family groupsheet. I was

especially interested in your information on Georgia Bassett since a

cousin of mine has recently transcribed a poignant letter from her to

my great-great grandmother Martha Burnett Hatcher (later Ellis).

According to the letter, they were cousins. Martha's mother was

Patience Mahalia Morris. Patience's father (from work of other

researchers) was Benjamin Morris.

My Dear Old Friend

I seat myself this evening to write you a few lines to inform you

that I am yet in the land of the living and although some years have

elapsed since I have seen you I assure you you are not forgotten by

me. This leaves me in very good health and I trust you enjoying the

like blessing. Brother Elishas wife received a letter from you last

year which was intended for us both. I recon you thought I did not

intend to reply ***obscured by scotch tape***I think you will only

wonder ***obscured by scotch tape*** with a kind loving husband who

always treated me very kind and was all to me that I could ask or

wish we live in peace and pleasure without any thing to mar our

happiness eight years to a day. I can look back upon my past life I

never knew what trouble was until the 14th of last July he joined the

Southern Rights Artillery oh what a sad day it was to me when I

looked after him perhaps for the last time. I never shall be able to

express the feelings I ***** not more than two minutes after he was

gone. I thought if the whole world was at my command I would give it

all just only to have him with me again but that pleasure was denied

me and I have never seen him since nor did my troubles end here. I

had two lovely children the oldest was nearly three years old her

name was Anna Valetta the baby was nearly 3 months old her name was

Georgia Melissa. I never saw more promising children in my life. They

both and especially Anna was a favorite with everyone that saw them.

But alas their time on earth was short the destroying Angel entered

my sweet little home and took my sweet little children from me.

Georgia died just nine days before Anna both scarlet fever in the

worst form. I never saw anything suffer like they did in my life.

Georgia was not able to make any noise at all in about ten days

before she died. She lived fourteen days after she was taken and Anna

live twenty three days after she was taken. Oh how desolate is my

once sweet little home striped of all that was lovely and pleasant in

my eyes. No one but God and myself know what trouble deep I waded

through in the past ten months. I was first taken sick in ****scotch

tape**** bed a week to both my little darlings was took sick

***scotch tape*** to get off my bed to wait on them **** a good

nights rest in thirty nights. It only seems a wonder that I was

spaired.

I have now only one consolation left and that is I know the Lord does

all things well. I cannot see now why he should thus afflict me but I

know it is all right for God cannot err. I have the blessed

consolation of knowing my little darlings is in Heaven free from the

cares, troubles and snaresof this world and by the grace of God I

intend to meet them where parting will be no more.

I am blessed with a Christian husband if he should be spaired to me I

will try and be content with my lot but the dreadful thought of

losing him nearly distracts me. Dear Martha I recon you are tired of

my tale of woe. I recon you scarcely recognize the once light hearted

Georgia Bassett in these lines. I would be very glad to see you and

have a long talk with you.

Close for the present hopeing to hear from you very soon.

"Bassett Homeplace" from his father, Stephen Elisha, and a second generation of Bassett children

grew up there as their father farmed the large property. In their later years, they owned and operated

the Bassett Hotel in downtown Fort Valley (formerly known as the Watson House). The purchase of

Notes for Elisha Gordon Bassett:

General Notes:

Elisha Gordon Bassett was born in Ft. Valley, attended local schools and graduated from Mercer

University(*), returning home to farm. He met his wife-to-be, Lena Ezell, at the County fair in

Macon.(*) They were married in Byron in 1889.

Elisha died of pneumonia at age 27, just months following his marriage to Lena, and before the birth

of their only child, Nellie. His death was a great loss to the family and his community, as he was a

greatly admired young man. He is buried in Shiloh Methodist Churchyard, Byron, GA.

His obituary read, in part;

"Lish" Bassett. as he was familiarly known by his many friends, was a young man of many noble

traits; a warm-hearted friend, a true Christian, a most genial companion; he made friends of all with

whom he came in contact. He was a young farmer with a bright future before him, having inherited an

unusual amount of pluck and energy from his father. He was a tireless worker and gave promise of

being one of the largest landed estate owners in this section."

Following Lish's death, Lena moved back to Byron to live with her parents and for a while, Lena was

the postmistress of the tiny Byron Post Office(*). Lena married a second time, to William Wallace

the postmistress of the tiny Byron Post Office(*). Lena married a second time, to William Wallace

Peavy and had two more children and a happy marriage, according to her grand-daughter, Penny

Almon.

(*) From Remembrances of Nellie Bassett Lamar"

Recorded by Nellie Lamar

Lena Ezell daughter of Ezekiel Hamilton Ezell and Penelope Holmes was born on 29 Sep 1866[56].

She died in 1933[18].

Elisha Gordon Bassett and Lena Ezell were married on 20 Feb 1889 in Byron, GA. They had the

following children:

72. i. Nellie Gordon Bassett was born on 22 Nov 1889 in Byron, GA. She married Melrose A.

Lamar on 03 Oct 1909[56]. She died on 20 Aug 1983 in Ft. Valley, GA.

42. Charles Dunwody Bassett-5 (Stephen Elisha-4, Stephen-3, William-2, Francis-1) was born on 13

Oct 1870 in Fort Valley, Georgia. He died on 13 Apr 1935 in Crawford Co., Georgia[46].

Notes for Charles Dunwody Bassett:

General Notes:

Charlie grew up on the Bassett homeplace in Fort Valley, one of the nine children of the Rev. Stephen

Elisha Bassett and his wife Frances. From old family letters, family tales and his obituary, we know

that the Rev. Bassett was both pious and a shrewd businessman. We also know that Charlie was no

saint.

He married Julia Frances Maynard of Forsyth at age 20. The Bassetts and Maynards had been

connected by marriage twice before when Julia's older sister Candace married Charlie's older brother

Gus and earlier when another Maynard brother (Elijah) married a Bassett grand-daughter. Charlie

apparently always earned his living as a salesman, and, by reputation, was a good one, according to

his Brown grandchildren.

He and Julia lived in Fort Valley and started their family, Malinda Frances "Lenna", born in 1892 and

Hugh, born in 1895. Julia died in 1897, 3 months after the birth of their third child, Bessie, as did her

baby. For whatever reason, there was considerable ill will on the part of the Maynards as to the

circumstances of her death and Julia and baby Bessie are buried in the Maynard plot in Forsyth.

Following the death of Julia, Charlie left Houston County. His two small children, Lenna and Hugh,

were farmed out and raised by others in the family. Lenna was raised in both Forsyth and Fort Valley

and Hugh was raised in Americus.

There is an interesting family story about Charlie Bassett returning to Georgia from his home in

Minneapolis many years later for a visit. While staying with his daughter, Lenna Bassett Brown, and

her family, he suffered a stroke, and the daughter he had abandoned as a small child became his

caretaker for the next 4 years, until his death in 1935. This Lenna managed while caring for her

husband and 11 children! The only bright side of the story is that upon his death, Lenna and Hugh,

her brother, inherited acreage from Charlie in Peach county, GA., land that he had inherited from his

father,* Stephen Elisha Bassett. There was a specific clause in Rev. Bassett's will, stipulating that

Charlie could not sell the land, although he had drawn the income from it for years, and that it could

be inherited only by a blood relative (which would have excluded Charlie's second wife and their

adopted son). This windfall meant a great deal to both Lenna and Hugh. Lenna inherited 218 acres,

which her family farmed for years, and Hugh, then living in California, sold his share and the money

meant a new start after the Depression years and the death of his wife.

*Charlie inherited the property called "the Claxton place".

(It was not until I got into family research that I found that Grandfather Charlie had been alive during

Daddy's adult life, having died in 1935. I'm under the impression that they had no relationship. SF)

Julia Frances Maynard daughter of William Tansel Maynard and Martha Malinda Dewberry was born

on 25 Jul 1869 in Monroe Co. GA[57]. She died on 23 Jun 1897 in Houston Co.[18].

Notes for Julia Frances Maynard:

General Notes:

Here follows, what I know of Julia;

She was the 11th child (of 12) in the large Maynard family and apparently much loved as the little

sister of the clan. The Maynards were from Forsyth. She married Charlie Dunwody Bassett of Ft.

Valley in 1890 when she was 21 and he was 20. Her older sister, Candy, had married Charlie's older

brother, Gus, and another older brother (Elijah Thomas Maynard) was married to a Bassett cousin.

Charlie and Julia lived in Fort Valley after their marriage and their first 2 children (Lenna and Hugh)

were born there. Julia died at age 28, shortly after the birth of her third child in 1897, followed shortly

by the death of her baby daughter, Bessie.

Charlie had apparently turned out as a less than stellar husband and there was ill will over Julia's

death. The Maynards insisted that she be returned to her own family for burial.

Julia and her baby Bessie Mae are buried in the Maynard plot in the Forsyth City Cemetery, Forsyth,

GA. Listed in the index as follows;

69. Ralphiel Phillips Bassett-6 (Stephen Hicks-5, Stephen Elisha-4, Stephen-3, William-2, Francis-1)

was born in Sep 1891. He died on 16 Apr 1951 in Ft. Valley, GA.

Notes for Ralphiel Phillips Bassett:

General Notes:

Ralph was a graduate of the University of Georgia in 1915, and a member of Chi Phi fraternity and

Phi Beta Kappa. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces during the First World War from

May 1917-Sept. 1919, and attained the rank of Captain. He went to Europe with the Second Division,

saw service with the Ninth Marines, was wounded at Chateau Thierry and hospitalized for 3 months at

the base hospital at Chateau Roux, while recovering from severe wounds.

Perhaps the most life changing experience he had in France, however, was meeting Henriette

Bourdier, the lovely Parisian girl who became his wife in 1919. Ralph and his bride returned from

France, following the end of WWI, and lived, for a while, with his parents at the Bassett Hotel in Fort

Valley.

The transition from life in Paris to a small, rural Georgia town was not easy for Henriette. She was fun

loving and happy by nature and admired for her beauty and her fashionable wardrobe. War brides

were not that common in WWI and she was accorded a certain status in the region. However, her

welcome by her husband's parents was less than warm. Ralph's mother Maud, in particular, had

opposed the marriage. As for Ralph's father Stephen, he said "Two of my sons married foreigners",

referring to both Henriette and to his son Neville's wife Hazel, who came from Chicago.

After living with Stephen Hicks and Maud in the Bassett Hotel during the first few years of their

marriage, Ralph and Henriette moved to the Bassett homeplace and here they raised their family.. It

was, in fact, Henriette who named the homeplace Pineola.

Ralph became a Vice President of Atlanta Trust Co. and later worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance

where he was in charge of the farm loan division during the Depression. He retired at age 46, due to

a serious heart condition and spent the intervening years (until his death at 59) "raising" his 5

daughters and cherishing a reputation among their local swains as a much-feared, very strict father.

He was known forever to his children and grandchildren as "Daddy Bill". He had been dubbed "Billy"

by Henriette in their courting days.

Henriette Blanche Alphonsine Bourdier was born in 1894 in Paris, France. She died in Apr 1971 in

Bloomington, Indiana.

Notes for Henriette Blanche Alphonsine Bourdier:

General Notes:

Henriette was born to parents of modest means in the tiny village of Marmagne near Bourges,

France. She and her sister Marguerite were raised by wealthy relatives in Paris and she attended

boarding schools in Bourges, Paris, and Leicester, England.

During the First World War, she worked in Paris for the American Expeditionary Forces in the office of

then Col. Charles G. Dawes, as a secretary and interpreter in the office of the General Purchasing

Board. Dawes became General Dawes, serving as Pershing's right hand man and later was the vice

President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. He also served as the US Ambassador to

England. Documents bearing his signature on commendations and permits to Henriette Bourdier are

treasured by her family today.

70. Noble Paul Bassett-6 (Stephen Hicks-5, Stephen Elisha-4, Stephen-3, William-2, Francis-1) was

born on 21 Jan 1893. He died on 05 Jun 1961.

Notes for Noble Paul Bassett:

General Notes:

Noble Paul Bassett was a graduate of the University of Georgia and the State College of Agriculture.

He served in the U. S. Navy in World War I and later was the joint owner (with Ralph Phillips Bassett)

of the Bassett homeplace, which he farmed. It is Noble Paul, who built the house across the road

from Pineola, officially named "Broadacres". His letterhead of that era says he dealt in Real Estate as

well as being a Planter.

According to his family, his true interests lay in the civic and political arena. He was head of the

Democratic party in central Georgia, during the Roosevelt and Landon years. His personal political

connections enabled him to help the Blue Bird Bus Co., a major Fort Valley business, stay open

during WWII by obtaining a steel quota for them. His other civic activities included the Peach County

School Board and the Fort Valley Public Library.

His son, Ralph, describes "Boble" as he was fondly called, as a shy man, who did not like the

spotlight. He was, however, an extremely opinionated man and a voracious writer. In 1944, he

published a book, "A Constitution of the United Nations of the World". His motive, like others of his

generation who had seen two world wars, was to offer his vision of world peace and order. Likewise,

he wrote a plan to eliminate farm surpluses and sent it to Richard Nixon, who wrote him that it was an

excellent plan, but not politically viable.

Edith Melton was born on 14 Oct 1902 in Opelika, Ala.[66]. She died on 15 Oct 1982 in Ft. Valley,

Generation 6 (con't)

i. Evelyn Bassett was born on 25 Jan 1932. She married Carroll Tillman in 1956.

Notes for Evelyn Bassett:

General Notes:

Evelyn and her brother, Ralph, grew up at the Bassett homeplace, and later across the

road at Broadacres. She has fond memories of her childhood. She tells stories of

swimming in the old fishpond in the side yard with her cousin Patsy and also how the two

of them caught the house on fire with matches in a closet. Claims she ran and got under a

bed while Patsy reported the fire. A bucket brigade saved the day, but the charred wood

still shows in the closet at Pineola!

She also speaks of the pride she had in her father (she called him Boble) and the great

love she had for both him and her Uncle Ralph. Also how being a Bassett was a

responsibility taken very seriously.

Evelyn graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1953 and taught school in Atlanta for 3

years until her marriage to Carroll Tillman. Thereafter she continued to teach in various

locations as her husband relocated and also to complete a M.A. in counseling. She

counseled at the high school level in the Sacramento, CA area and later in Tokyo.

Following her earlier divorce, she married Wally Fuqua in 1970, continued counseling in

various schools in California, and earned her Ph. D. in psychology from the Professional

School of Psychology in 1983, retiring from the school system in 1987. Her husband,

Wally, died in 1984. In 1987, she published a book, "From Sirius to Earth" dealing with

extraterrestrial soul exchange. She has traveled extensively, but says she's always glad to

get home, and today, home is California, which she loves.

During the Christmas holidays of 2000, Evelyn and Col. Edwin J. Cook were married

aboard the ship Olympic Voyager in the Caribbean. He is retired from the Air Force and is

a rancher in California. Ed accompanied her to the Bassett Reunion in May of 2000, so

has seen the scenes of her childhood and met many relatives.

Evelyn says she feels "extremely fortunate to have had a wonderful childhood on the

Bassett farm with an extended and loving family around me. We were always loved and

protected, giving all of the Bassetts I know a deep inner sense of security."

89. ii. Ralph Noble Bassett was born on 26 Sep 1936. He married Melba Ann Cronenburg on 05

Sep 1959.

71. Lucy Cornelia Bassett-6 (Stephen Hicks-5, Stephen Elisha-4, Stephen-3, William-2, Francis-1) was

born on 09 Oct 1894. She died on 25 Oct 1985 in Morganton, NC.

Notes for Lucy Cornelia Bassett:

General Notes:

Lucy grew up at the Bassett homeplace, purchased by her father shortly before her birth. She was

the only daughter of Stephen and Maud to survive infancy.

She was educated at Brenau College in Gainesville, GA., college educated at the insistence of her

mother and later taught school for a number of years in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

Lucy returned home for a few years following the death of her mother, to care for her ailing father until

his death in 1925, an obligation that she felt was hers as the only daughter. She met her husband

while working as a teacher in Morganton, NC and married him in Chicago while vacationing with "Aunt

Fannie".

She and her husband, Dr. William Kibler, lived in Morganton, where he practiced medicine and they

raised their two daughters. Her daughter, Lucy Maud, reports that her Mother was highly intelligent,

quite strict, but loving. She was very active within her community, being instrumental in establishing

the Girl Scouts in Morganton, worked for her church, the United Methodist, and was active with the

PTA.

(She was also interested in family history and wrote of the Bassett family in about 1929. We are

indebted to her for much early information on the family.)

William Herbert Kibler was born on 07 Mar 1884 in Morganton, Burke Co. NC. He died in Feb 1975

in Morganton, NC.

72. Nellie Gordon Bassett-6 (Elisha Gordon-5, Stephen Elisha-4, Stephen-3, William-2, Francis-1) was

born on 22 Nov 1889 in Byron, GA. She died on 20 Aug 1983 in Ft. Valley, GA.

Notes for Nellie Gordon Bassett:

General Notes:

Nellie was a posthumous baby, born following the early death of her father, Elisha Gordon Bassett.

She lived as a small child in Byron, in the home of her maternal grand-parents and as the much loved

and doted on grand-child of both the Bassetts and Ezells.

The two grandfathers were in many ways opposite. Papa Bassett was a man of property, while Zeke

Ezell was more inclined to give away what he had rather than accumulate anything. At Papa

Bassett's house, prayers were long, and everyone knelt with arms resting on a chair seat to listen to

Papa pray. The view through the slatted chair back was forever photographed on Nellie Bassett's

mind.**

She remembered having reservations about "Miss Tommie", Papa Bassett's wife, who was very

religious and considered herself "sanctified" and therefore not subject to anger, but Nellie

remembered that her eyes could look angry and her lips could be compressed very tightly together at

times.**

Nellie was musical and an avid, life-long reader. She attended Cox College in Atlanta and went to

Texas as a young bride, where her husband worked for the railroads and her 2 daughters were born.

He later became a lawyer and practiced in West Palm Beach, FL, where they lived for a number of

years. She always returned for visits with family in the Byron/Ft. Valley area however, and in their later

life, she and her husband returned to Ft. Valley to live. Nellie died in Fort Valley at age 92.

She and her husband are both buried at Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley.

Mary Margaret Brennan daughter of Bartholimue Brennan and Helena "Lena" O'Brien[70] was born

on 26 Apr 1894 in Athens, Tx[71]. She died on 13 Aug 1935 in Maywood, CA (Los Angeles Co.)[72].

Notes for Mary Margaret Brennan:

General Notes:

The only record of Mary Margaret's birthplace as Athens, TX is on her death certificate, obviously

provided by Hugh, her husband. In the History of Henderson Co. Texas (USGENWEB) is mention of

the fact that the St. Louis & Southwestern Railroad came through Athens in the "mid-1890's. Her

father was believed to be a stonemason for the railroads, so this fits with the family living there in

1894. (This info from Jean Brennan, son of her brother Joe)

Her mother, Lena, and a newborn died at childbirth in 1897. Bartholimue, her father, seems to have

left the maternal grandparents to raise his children and he later remarries and has a second family

(Grace and Katherine). Mary and Joseph appear in the 1900 federal census in Dublin, TX, living with

their grandparents, Owen and Mary O'Brien. I believe that Mary O'Brien, the Grandmother, must

have died in the early 1900's. The Grandfather, Owen, died in 1912. In the 1910 census, the children

are living with their maternal uncle, Eugene O'Brien and his wife Mary and daughter, Minnie, in

Alexander, TX. Nothing else is known of her childhood. Jean Brennan says that though his father

(Joe) did not talk much about his childhood, he reported that Eugene O'Brien, the uncle, was a mean

SOB when drunk. We can guess that Mary and Joe would have left as soon as they could.

Mary is found in the Houston, TX City Directory in 1917, working for the Standard Prtg. and Litho Co.

and boarding at 1307 Mary St., Houston.

There is record of a Mary Brennan teaching school at the Clairette School in Clairette, TX (also in

Erath Co.) during the early 1920's. This may have been our Mary. Later, in the 1930 census, by then

married to Daddy, she's listed as Margaret Bassett, working as a bookkeeper in Norwalk, California.

When she was a child, in both the 1900 and 1910 census', she's listed as Mary Brennan. She

apparently prefered Margaret however, and went by that name as an adult. She's listed as Margaret

M. Bassett in the 1930 census and as Margaret in her obituary and I will list her that way also. I

guess she, like me, and always used her middle name instead of Mary.

Hugh Gale Bassett and Mary Margaret Brennan married. They had the following children:

Frances lost her father, Neville Bassett, when she was four years old. Her mother, Hazel, had been

and Fort Valley. During the periods that they were in Ft. Valley, Hazel managed the dining room in

the Bassett Hotel and also worked as a secretary locally. Eventually, they did return to the Chicago

She grew up, however, at Pineola, the family having moved to the homeplace when she was a baby.

She had completed one year at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville when she eloped

and this is where they met. The marriage was not favored by her parents, although they came to

Masters degrees from the University of NC (Chapel Hill) in French Literature and Indiana University in

Library Science.

She moved as a new bride to Bloomington, IN. in 1950, and lives there still. (2001). Her husband, Al,

became a professor of English and American Literature at Indiana University, remaining there until his

retirement in 1985. Simone spent part of her career in the Indiana University Library system, working

there for 12 years, 8 of them in the Biology Library. Retiring, when daughter, Marise, was born in

1961, Simone loved these interim years of her life. The extended visits of her widowed mother,

Henriette Bassett, greatly added to her pleasure.

She again returned to school while Marise was in college, earning a Specialist's degree in Library

and Information Science at age 60, and working on database management. She is highly gifted at

needlework, producing many crossstitch treasures for family and friends over the years. She is also

a devoted gardener, growing roses being her great love. She claims her headstone should read,

"She stitched, she gardened, she went to school."

Simone's husband, Al, died in 1992, after a lengthy illness.

(Simone (together with Delise and Paul Knight) was the power that produced the Bassett Family

Reunion in Ft. Valley in May, 2000. Her tireless efforts saw about 65 Bassett descendents together,

Marise grew up at Pineola, 4th of the 5 Bassett daughters. Her father called her "Sallie-Jo". She

attended Georgia State College for Women, receiving her bachelor's degree in 1949. She was a

primary school teacher for a total of 11 years and taught in SC, FL, KY and Germany. She was

teaching the children of military personnel at Ft. Knox, KY when she met her husband-to-be, Ken, an

Army Lieutenant, stationed there. They were married at Ft. Knox in 1956 and honeymooned at

Cumberland Falls, KY.

Following his military service, Ken went on to Purdue University, in West Lafayette, IN, where he

earned both a Masters and PhD in Horticulture. Their children, daughter Deborah, and son Ken, Jr.,

were born while Ken was in school at Purdue.

Because of severe allergy problems suffered by Deborah and the need for a drier climate, the family

relocated in 1968 to Ft. Collins, Co. where Ken accepted the position of Department Head of

Horticulture at Colorado State University. Marise was a stay at home Mom, and spent the bulk of her

time providing a loving home to her children and husband. That her efforts bore fruit can be heard in

the words of son Ken, Jr., who says he had a "strong, but supportive father and a mom with a huge

heart and unfaltering optimism." He also says she has more friends than anyone he's ever known.

Notes for Patsy Edith Eugenie Bassett:

The youngest of the "5 Bassett girls", Patsy's life carried her far from Fort Valley, Ga. She was,

however, the last Bassett owner of Pineola (the house and a few acres), having been given the

homeplace by her mother, Henriette, who inherited it after Ralph's death.

Patsy married Russell Hilliard in 1951, while they were both still in school. They graduated from

Valdosta State University in 1952, and Patsy taught second grade in Zebulon, NC while Russell

attended seminary. In 1957 they left for Spain, where Russell began approximately 21 years working

as a teacher in a small Bible Institute for Spanish Baptist pastors and in publishing, living in

Barcelona, Zaragoza, and Madrid. Patsy was busy raising their 4 children who received their early

schooling at The American School of Barcelona.

In 1976, they returned to the United States due to Russell's ill health. He was inactive for about

eleven years. Having been asked to teach at the college level, Patsy returned to school and finished

her master's degree in Spanish, at age 50, from Appalachian State University. She spent a total of 21

years as a professor of Spanish and English as a Second Language at Montreat College, a small

Liberal Arts College in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She says that these were truly wonderful years for

her. She recently retired and she and Russell currently volunteer among the Latinos in the Asheville

area. Due to Russell's greatly improved health, he is now serving as pastor of a Latino congregation.

Their work includes social work, translating for doctors and lawyers and helping people connect with

jobs and housing.

reports that she was a great reader and did gorgeous needlework, and had many interests; bridge,

invalid, and did see her in a wheelchair in her later years. However, she lived at home and was

independent until her death. A woman of great strength of character.
