History from the Farm

Caroline Henderson - Laurens County, Georgia

Zenus Fordham (Seated to the left of 6) Birthday at T. J. Perry house in Laurens County, Georgia - Caroline is Number 6

Caroline Henderson was 16 when the civil war ended. At the time, she lived on a farm in Laurens County, Georgia. We have been told that she was not happy there and wanted to leave when she was freed.
She asked around and was told a nice man named Eason Perry lived on Moore Station Rd. and that he might have a place for her. She went to see Mr. Perry and asked if she could live there. He told her that if she would help care for the children, he would build her a cabin where she could live.
She lived in that cabin for the rest of her life. The family said that she was offered a larger cabin but said she liked her place and did not want to leave. She became a very well-known midwife and is listed in the Georgia archives. She lived to be about 90.

Eason Perry was Paul’s 2nd Great Grandfather.

In 2002, Paul’s Aunt owned the property where the cabin still stood. The state was purchasing the property for the Dublin bypass and the cabin was going to be destroyed. Paul’s Aunt knew how much we loved history so she offered us the cabin to move it to Pineola. We asked a moving company to look at the cabin and see if it could be moved but they said it had too much rotten wood and could not be moved.
We told Aunt Nelle the news. She asked if we would like to dismantle the cabin and salvage the wood.

The cabin was in the woods about 300 feet from the road behind a barbed wire fence. We spent the next 4 days taking the cabin apart, board by board, and transporting it back to Pineola. That was a great 4 days. We really enjoyed the experience of working together with a couple of ladders, 2 hammers, and a crowbar.

We used a lot of the wood to build our chicken house. We also used it in the Cotton Barn as trim around the doors. Paul’s Father, Howard, even made the sink in the women’s restroom from the timber. The front door of Caroline’s home is hanging in our kitchen.
